mental health counselor

People are often curious about what counseling entails. Some are even a bit nervous about making a first appointment. The first session of therapy, and sometimes even the first few sessions, will focus on us getting to know each other and beginning the therapeutic process. I will listen, ask questions, and gather information about you so that I can fully understand your counseling needs. At the same time, you will be able to ask me questions and determine whether you believe I am the right counselor for you.

Some people come to their first session eager to talk. Other people have a harder time sharing information and require more direction and specific questioning. Either way is just fine. Your first session will last about an hour. By the end of the session, we will be able to start thinking about the goals of counseling, what you would like to achieve with therapy, and how I might be able to help.

As you continue therapy, we will work together to monitor your progress. Although counseling can sometimes be difficult, it has the potential for amazing rewards. Counseling often results in the solution of specific problems, healthier relationships, and an increase in wellbeing. As your counselor, I will ensure that I listen carefully, treat you with respect, and do my best to help you reach your counseling goals.
